STRATUM CHAIR

The chair explores digitally reinterpreting the notion of stratum, the layers of sediment that compose rock. Instead of using sediment type to distinguish layers, the chair defines layers in side elevation with pre-existing objects. Each layer is composed of a single object that is replicated and transformed within each layer. Since each layer uses a different object, layers of the chair are defined by the different formal properties of each individual object, similar to how layers of stratum are defined by different sediment properties. From front elevation and top plan the chair inverts this method of layer division by using solid lines to divide an otherwise continuous formal condition.
