MALI MUSEUM

The proposal is for an underground addition to the Mali Museum of Art in Lima, Peru. The design is defined by two main vaults, one that organizes entry circulation above the submerged courtyard, and another that organizes interior vertical circulation. The vault’s surface reinterprets the qualities of the near perfect complex connections in stonework of pre-colonial Peru, using individual kitbashed stones to at some points resemble formal qualities of the traditional stone, and at other moments resemble the decontextualized surfaces of objects. The mix of traditional and emerging techniques creates an architectural aesthetic between ancient and alien.
