URBAN CORRIDOR

Almost Black and White

Urban Corridor proposes a new intervention for NYC’s Sunshine Theater. Often urban housing projects minimize circulation space to maximize sell-able square footage, but this project considers circulation space a place of value. First by removing a previous addition to the theater to create a new communal entry along the side of the building. Second by creating unobstructed circulation on each unit level terminating in glazing and communal space, capitalizing on continuity and light within the building’s urban context. The vertical organization of units create communicative multi-height balconies. The materials used along the exterior extend the building's preserved facade, creating an intricate relationship that blurs where the existing building ends and its intervention begins. The roof creates communal space through multi-level terraces, creating a varied landscape of framed spaces for residents to take in panoramic views of the city.
